Hello darlings!
I've got a little secret for you. It's very hush hush, but here's what I can tell you:
I am writing an article. It's going to be a groundbreaking exposé on something I've been wondering for a while. I've already come up with the title, but I need to do some recon and research this Christmas break and when I get back to The Forest for it. Just to tide you over until I finally release my findings here, I'll give you a few hints.
1. It involves guys and girls
2. The title is fantastic, if I do say so myself
3. Hopefully, it'll shed a new perspective on an age old dilemma
That's all for now.
Over and out.
Later alligators.

RACHEL MCADAMS AND RYAN GOSLING.
Darlings. I can't even.

Is this real life? I'm more emotionally invested in their relationship than my own... and by my own, I mean my relationship with Ben and Jerry.

Sam's Saturday!
Hello darlings!
What a whirlwind week! There have been some very hard moments, but I was reminded that there is so much to be thankful for.
1. Know that you matter to someone. You've positively impacted their life, and you are loved. With this in mind, tell someone how much they mean to you. You never know how much that might mean to them.
2. On a lighter note, I spend yesterday at Camino's again! Two words: Maple Latte. Yes, it was as delicious as it sounds. AND now I'm best friends with the barista. Win.
3. On Friday, two of my friends and I decided to be spontaneous and go see a late night movie. Our choice: About Time. It was heartwarming, interesting, and surprisingly substantial. Grab your mom, your brother, your dad, your friends, anyone and go see this sweet film. I can guarantee you'll leave the theater smiling.
4. Registered for my classes for next semester! I'm taking 2 communications classes (Law & Rhetoric, as well as Organizational Rhetoric), an art history class (19th Century European Art), an entrepreneurship class (Design Building and High Performance Teams), and I'm auditing an intensive elementary French class. My dream of finally learning French is going to come true!
5. Alexis Ohanian came to Wake to discuss his journey and how he founded Reddit: the front page of the internet. Besides being one of the coolest cats around, he offered great advice and encouraged everyone to take a leap of faith and pursue a dream.
What I'm looking forward to next week:
Date Function on Friday! The theme is GΘLD RUSH. I'm thinking of either wearing my Koalafornia Mank, maybe a California flag as a cape, and being the "California Gold Rush." Or, if anyone has a suggestions, send them my way!
That's all for now, darlings! Have a wonderful week!

Sam's Saturday Inaugural Post
Hello darlings! As part of my goal to blog at least once a
week, I’ve decided to try this thing called “Sam’s Saturday” where I’ll recap
my week and give you a glimpse of what’s on the agenda for next week!
Without further ado, here’s my inaugural Sam’s Saturday:
5.
Lilting Banshees, Wake’s comedy troupe, had a show this Wednesday. My best
friend and I almost fell off our seats, we were laughing so hard. The dude next
to us actually did. Which made us laugh even more.
4. Hairspray! My best friend and I went to see Wake’s musical, Hairspray, last night. It was AMAZING. The cast and crew did an incredible job, and they had the audience singing and dancing and smiling the whole time!
2. Instead of doing homework on night, my best friend and I decided to throw responsibility to the colors of the wind and watch Pocahontas instead. Best. Decision. Ever.
1. I finished reading “In Cold Blood,” by Truman Capote for my English class. If you haven’t read it, finish reading this blog post, shut your computer and sprint to your nearest local bookstore and buy it. It’s an aggressive book, it’s depressing, shocking, disturbing, and heartbreaking, but in the best way. Discover how Capote changed the literary world forever by creating the “creative non-fiction” genre, and why he said, “this book will be book of the decade,” even before he had written 1 word of it. Truman Capote = the man.
Sneak preview of next week:
Tests,
Papers, and Presentations! BUT, while that might not sound exciting, my
communications professor approved my paper topic. Which is analyzing the film Midnight
in Paris and how it’s a representation of historical analogy and collective
memory of the 1920’s. I’m STOKED.
That’s
all for now, dearies! Have a lovely rest of your weekend!

Apologies and Aspirations
Hola Alligators! This whole
semester I’ve been writing papers and critiquing and analyzing and theorizing
and equalizing and every other –izing you could think of, but what I haven’t
been doing is digitizing. And by digitizing, I mean blogging. And by this, I
mean that I feel terrible for not blogging in a while. And by a while I mean
almost 5 months…
So, here’s my New Year’s Resolution! I’m getting a jump start on it so by the time January rolls around, it’ll already be a habit. Here’s my goal: Blog at least once a week. It’ll be a short little post, it might just have a picture of something I baked with a caption, but I think if I get in the habit of posting, it’ll become second nature!
A little update: Remember that 2-mile run I was training for over the summer in order to pass my health class? Well, a month ago, guess where I was? On a track. Guess who I was with? My entire health class. Guess what I did? RAN 2 MILES IN 19:58!!! I PASSED. I did it. Literally months of blood, sweat and tears culminated in my receiving an A in my health class. I never wanted to see another pair of running shoes or listen to my “jogging” playlist, hit up a treadmill or a trail ever again. This runner’s enthusiasm had run out.
Confession: I haven’t gone to Wake’s gym all semester, and I’ve only gone to 3 workout classes. I worked out almost every day this summer, felt great, and was really proud of how my endurance and strength were improving. Then, I got back to Wake and all of that went away.
Until this Tuesday! I was in my room, about ready to take a nap, when I got a text from my best friend saying she was going to the gym, and asked if I wanted to join her. I was about to send a polite decline, and then I saw my running shoes out of the corner of my eye. They had somehow crept out of the depths of my closet (I stashed them in there after the health test), and looked like they were itching to go out. I thought about it for a second, deleted what I had started to write, and responded, “Be there in 10 minutes!” I threw my hair up in a bun, tossed on some workout pants and a mank and laced up my running shoes.
As I entered the gym, Eye of the Tiger came on. I took this as a positive sign as I surveyed the gym. My options were arms, abs, cycling, elliptical, or weights. And then I saw it. Right next to my best friend on the elliptical. My archnemesis. The thing I had seen at least three times a week this summer. The thing I thought would be the bane of my existence.
I saw the treadmill.
Maybe I was just lonely or maybe I missed the feeling of a continuous ribbon of traction beneath my feet, but I walked over to it, fully intending to get on the elliptical two machines down. Instead, I hopped on. I stretched my calves and Achilles and told myself I was only going to jog for 3 songs. I pressed “quick start,” and set the pace on 4.4 out of 10. Slow, but not agonizingly slow. A good warm up. I would barely notice I was back on it. I only had 45 minutes before I would have to run off to class, but I figured this was better than taking a nap.
Once I hit that green button, all bets were off. 3 songs turned into 5 songs which turned into 10 songs, which turned into 12 songs. 4.4 pace turned into 4.8 pace, then 5.0 pace, then 5.2 pace and finally an all out sprint for the last minute of running. And .5 miles turned into 1.2 miles which turned into 2 miles which turned into 2.7 miles.
Yes, you read that right. 2.7 MILES. And the best part was, I could’ve kept running much longer. So I will.
Today, I went back to the gym and ran (not jogged, but ran) 2 miles in 19 minutes. This weekend, I’ll go on another run. Next Tuesday, I’ll be back on that treadmill. Next Thursday, I’ll be tearing up that trail.
This girl is back in the race, and back in the game. Which game? You ask?
The Pretty Pink Prep game, of course.

Tackling the Treadmill
Dearies, I'm not going to lie to you. Running is pretty tough. I don't know how marathoner's or 5k-ers do it, I've never really understood the concept of a "runner's high," which is apparently the amazing feeling you get while running but the only amazing feeling I've ever gotten while running is when I stop. I've got this crazed idea to run a 5k (that, and the fact I have to run 2 miles in under 20 minutes to pass my health class in the fall), and while some people can whip out a 5k as a "casual run" (my running friend's term, obviously not mine), this girl does not fall into that category.
Therefore, I've decided I need to start training for my 5k / 2 mi run to pass my health class. Slightly pathetic? Yep, but if I could run just lead out my door and bust out 3.1 miles no problem, then there wouldn't be anything to write about and you wouldn't get to hear about my remarkable first run. And, lets be honest, who doesn't want to miss that?
So... guess what I did 2 days ago and then again yesterday? I'm pretty sure you already know the answer to that. BUT what you didn't know, is that I did a jog/walk routine 2 days ago, with intense incline and a decently quick pace, just to sort of shock my legs into working hard again.
Side note, I should preface this and say that I have been going on "jogs" around my neighborhood. I thought I was jogging around 1 mile, .5 miles to the end of the street and .5 miles back. I was huffing and puffing by the end of it, but I was feeling pretty great and like the whole "run 2 miles in under 20 minutes" thing was going to be easier than I thought. Imagine my surprise when I clocked it, and it's only .5 miles total...
Which brings me to a treadmill 2 days ago. Normally, I can't stand gym's because I think they're boring, but I needed to see how far 2 miles was, and then potentially 3.1 miles if I could still move my legs after the pivotal 2 mile mark. Well, I am proud to say that two days ago, I managed to run / walk for 30 minutes. Then, yesterday, I decided my legs, physical stamina and mental stamina were up to handle the challenge. I ran for... wait for it... 2.37 miles in 35 minutes!
I did it! I ran continuously for over 2 miles! While this is not really that close to my end goal, it's a starting point. Honestly, by the end of those hard 2.37 miles, I was sweating and panting, but I felt like I had just finished first place in a marathon. I even did the whole "throw my arms up like a champion" bit for good measure.
Since I now know that I can actually run 2 miles, the next task is to try and make it to 2.5miles, then to 3 miles, then work up to 3.1. Once we've got the distance covered, we can work on speed. At least that's my plan. We'll see how it goes tomorrow morning when I tackle the treadmill once again.
Happy running!

Here's to Summer!
Darlings! I've got some wonderful news. It's here. It's finally here. The moment I've been waiting for since I set foot on the plane to Winston Salem 8 1/2 long months ago. I am home for the summer!
This summer is all about soul-searching. I re-read some of Emerson's essay's and he says (I'm majorly paraphrasing) to "return to nature" because nature is "where you find yourself." I've never been one for the super outdoorsy stuff, my nature is the beach, and the last time I went camping was when I was probably 12, but Emerson has a point. So, since this last year was filled with trials, tribulations, wonderful moments and terrible moments which will be learned from and then forgotten forever, I'm going to return to nature. This means long walks on the beach, figuring life out, taking a few hikes, re-discovering what I love doing and then make a plan to do it, make a plan in general, and a few other things. What better way to start off summer than with a list?
In case you had forgotten, I'm a big list girl. The amount of lists I have on the "notepad" of my iPhone is over 350. I even make to-do lists with things I know I'll accomplish in the next 10 minutes just so I can feel awesome when I cross them off. That's not weird, right?
Anyway, without further ado, here is my list for Sam's Summer 2013
1. Bake a chocolate soufflé. Chocolate soufflé's are my brother's favorite desserts, and I want to surprise him with it for his birthday. At the risk of pulling an Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, and having my soufflé collapse coming out of the oven, I've looked through various cookbooks, websites and magazines to discover the secret: add an extra egg white, make sure people are quiet while the soufflé is rising, and don't open the oven door while it's rising.
2. Learn French. Or at least be able to relatively converse in French. I've always wanted to learn it, but living in Southern California requires you know Spanish, so I went the Español route during high school and for one semester of college. But, now is the time to learn French! C'est la vie! Or La vie en rose! Or j'nai se quois! Or something like that...
3. Go camping overnight. Yes, you read that right. This girl is going camping. Let me explain: My brother and my dad are going on a 12 day hike through the New Mexican wilderness at the end of August. While there's no way I would even consider doing a 12 day hiking expedition through the rain, lightening storms, mud, mountains, and other obstacles they'll have to face, they're doing these practice hikes and overnight camps to get them ready for it. Apparently, there's a huge sense of camaraderie with the people they're going camping with. And, as Emerson said, the best way to re-align yourself is to connect with nature. Besides pulling a Thoreau on Walden Pond and building a cabin next to a lake and living there for 2 years, I thought an overnight camping excursion would basically achieve the same thing.
For the record, we aren't talking glamping, like in Santa Barbara status. We're talking pitch a tent and sleep on the ground next to a beautiful lake camping. I'm imagining something like Parent Trap, or City Slickers. I'll tell you in a later blog post after I actually go camping if this was the case.
4. Write a book. I wrote most of one last year, and then decided I really didn't like the plot, the characters, or really anything about it, so I've scrapped it and came up with something else. I've got an idea for one, and I'm really excited for it. I'm on page 10, and so far, so good. If I get around to finishing it and editing it, I'll even release a chapter on this blog for you to check out.
5. Paint 2 more paintings. I've already done a "sunset on the beach," and a "cute seaside cottage perched atop a grassy hill," but I want to paint 2 more in 2 completely different styles. Any suggestions?
6. Go sailing. I know, it's always on my summer list, but it's one of my favorite things ever. I love sailing. If there are any gentleman reading this, take note!
7. Run a 5k. I have to run 2 miles in under 20 minutes to pass my health class in the fall, so I figure that if I run a 5k, I'll be in good shape! While you're thinking to yourself, '2 miles in 20 minutes? That's a 10 minute mile. That's so easy!" remember that this is me we are talking about. 1 1/2 hour long Pilates class? Alright. Swim 20 laps in a pool in 15 minutes? Did that yesterday. Tackle Disneyland from 9am-11pm? Doing that on Friday. Run 2 miles in 20 minutes? I'm sorry, what... But, not to fear! I've been running every other day, and today I even broke the 2 mile mark! (I ran 2.37 miles, to be exact, not that I'm counting or anything). Granted, it took me about 30 minutes, but it's a step (pun intended) in the right direction! Next week, maybe I'll even pass the 3 mile mark! Only time (and lots of sweat, tears and panting) will tell.
8. Post at least once a week, hopefully more. And I'm serious about this. Like, actually. There will be a new blog post at least once a week, so keep checking back!
I'll keep adding to this, and lovelies, if you have any suggestions for my list or for posts, send them along my way. I'd love to hear from you!
Here's to a summer of soul searching, rediscovering passions and to you! Happy Summer!

SPRING BREAK
Hello darlings!
I've got two words for you: Spring. Break. Yes, yours truly will finally be back in the land of sun, surf and sand in just a few hours! I'll be sipping my Arnold Palmer, making a cheese plate with my family and staring at this:
Here are some of my spring break essentials:
-a bikini. Lets be honest, who cares if your body isn't bikini ready, I just say go out there, put on a cute bathing suit (I'm a fan of Lilly's, I get a new one every year and I just absolutely adore it. Bonus points if they have matching shorts!)
-sunscreen. I recommend at least SPF 50, you don't want to get skin cancer or wrinkles!
-quality happy tunes to sing as you drive up and down PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)
Here's my "Summer Needs to Come Sooner" playlist:
-Build Me Up Buttercup
-A-Punk
-Daydream Believer
-ANYTHING by Train (Hey Soul Sister, Drops of Jupiter, Save Me San Francisco, are my top 3)
-Rhythm of Love
-I'm Yours
-Sweet Caroline
-Happy Together
-Upside Down
-3 Little Birds, or Jamming
-Don't Worry, Be Happy
-Iris, or Slide
-There She Goes
-You Make My Dreams
-Run Around
-Breakfast at Tiffany's
-Carry On or We Are Young
-ANYTHING by Zac Brown Band (Chicken Fried, Keep Me in Mind, Toes, Let It GO, Whatever It IS, Knee Deep, Where the Boat Leaves From, you get the idea)
-And, lastly, my signature song: California Gurls
Have a wonderful week, dearies! Can't wait to tell you all about it!
XO

Did Someone Say OSCARS?
Darlings, the night is FINALLY upon us! The night we've all been looking forward to for the last 365 days. The reason we've sat through movies with a bipolar Bradley Cooper, angry French revolutionists and Iranian hostages. It's a night full of surprises, glitz and glamour. Some of these take place at the actual Kodak Theater, but I'm referring to the famous Academy Awards Red Carpet.
I've had an Oscar party every year for the last 5 years. Now that I'm in college, I'm going to uphold that tradition, but with a twist. I'm still getting some of my girlfriends together to watch the Red Carpet and the awards show in my room, dressed to the nine's, of course. Here are 5 things I'm doing this Sunday:
Making redvelvet carpet cupcakes and brown butter popcorn
Crafting a cheese plate from Whole Food's finest selection
Fixing my hair and donning a dress (probably my junior year prom dress seen here)
Printing out Oscar ballots so my guests can vote on their top film picks! (For my top picks in the major categories, see below)
Avidly critiquing and watching the red carpet and awards ceremony!
It's time to dim the lights and throw on a glamour gown! Dearies, it's Oscar time!
*My Selections:
Best Picture: Argo or Les Mis
Actor in a Leading Role: Hugh Jackman
Actress in a Leading Role: Emmanuelle Riva
Actor in a Supporting Role: Alan Arkin
Actress in a Supporting Role: Anne Hathaway
Director: Michael Haneke (Since Ben Afleck was snubbed by the Academy... a decision that I still don't agree with)
Score: Skyfall
Costume Design: Anna Karenina

Valentine's Day!
Darlings, guess what day it is? (Hint: it involves lots of pink and red, ridiculous amounts of chocolate and a little thing called love.) It's one of my favorite days of the year... Valentine's Day! The national day of love is finally here! February 14th is about love and all of its different forms: friendship, romance,
unconditional love, any kind of love!
I've spent today with decorating cupcakes with friends, guest DJ-ing on Wake Radio, and watching Valentines Day (the movie) with my two incredible Valentines, Ben and Jerry. Ladies, let's be real, Ben and Jerry are the only two men we really need in our lives. In short, my Valentines Day has been spent with the people I love. The only thing that could make it better is if my family were here! Not to worry, I made and mailed off a Valentine to them the other day, and I received two darling cards today! Nothing like some paper love to make the family seem closer than 3,000 miles away on a day like today!
To those of you who are reading this, I love you! I might not know you, but I already love you. Here's to life, here's to love, and here's to you! Happy Valentine's Day, dearies! Have a LOVE-ly rest of your night!
XOXO,
Sam

Dorm Decor: Valentines Day
My darling chiquita bonitas, I've stocked up on my glittery paper, candy conversation hearts and there is this peculiar scent (could it be... Love?) in the air. This can only mean one thing: Valentines Day is finally here!
Valentines Day is one of my favorite days out of the year. While I've never actually had a Valentine (it's on my bucket list), I absolutely love February 14th for a variety of reasons: there are people who are head over heels in love, random acts of love and massive declarations of love occur, and more people wear pink than any other day of the year! And, I can watch The Notebook and Titanic on repeat with my two incredible valentines (Ben and Jerry, obviously) with absolutely no shame.
It's alittle well known fact that I LOVE pink. I'm obsessed. I've got a pink car, I've got this blog, and I wear at least 1 pink article of clothing/accessory a day. So, when it came time to decorating my dorm for this Thursday, you can immediately guess what I color scheme I went with: pink, pink and more pink. But, just so it wasn't too overwhelming when you walk into my room, I decided to dial down the pink and throw in some greens and yellows and the occasional pop of red. Thanks to some $1 paper from Target's special holiday aisle, Mummsies darling Valentines Day package, and a few heart stencils from MarthaStewart.com, I turned my little dorm room into a Valentine's Day retreat.
Here are my tips for making any dorm room festive for February 14th:
Get some paper and cut out hearts and hang them around your room! You can make a garland, put them on your door, hang them from your ceiling, put them in your windows, etc
Find a candy dish and fill it with pink and red m&m's, candy conversation hearts, or licorice hearts!
Get some pink and red flowers (you always have fresh flowers in your room, of course!) and put them in little vases (or washed out Starbucks frapuccino glass bottles) around your room
Write the best love quotes of all time on pretty paper or index cards and hang them around your room
Get a little book (such as this book or this one) and put it on your nightstand
Find a small throw pillow in pink/red or with a heart on it (bonus points if it's heart shaped)
Or, you can make your own valentines and put a few on your desk! Stalk pinterest or They'll look festive, and you can invite a friend, have some chocolate and put on Valentines Day or the Notebook (Sorry Ben & Jerry, but Ryan Gosling beats both of you)
Valentines Day is all about love! So, on February 14th, it doesn't matter if you aren't spending it with the love of your life! Love has many different forms! Call your family and tell them how much you love them, send a Valentine to a friend who's out of state, bake cupcakes for your hall/friends (I'm baking these) or just do random acts of kindness throughout the day.
Have a LOVEly (see what I did there?) Valentines Day, darlings! XO

Fete Fete Fete!
Darlings, it seems to be that time of year again. With the inauguration
today, the official ball tomorrow, and a little something called bid day for
fraternities happing this week, you all know what I’m referring to. This always
seems to happen around this time every year, only instead of winter formal
preparations like the last four years, it is all about parties, date functions,
and the occasional (i.e. once every four years) inaugural ball this year. We all know that with parties, of course, comes
the delightful aspect of dressing up. But, before we continue on, I would like
to say that yes lovelies, I know I haven’t been around for a while. And yes, I
know my last blog post was in July,
but I promise you, I’m back for quite a while! And, with all the parties going
on, I thought I’d come back into the blogging world. Not only have I missed it
terribly, but we all know that I’m never one to miss out on a classy party!
As always, the initial question that comes with an invitation to a date function or perhaps even the inaugural ball is “what am I going to wear?” Not to worry, once you’re finished with this article, you’ll (hopefully) have a few ideas about what you’re going to be sporting for any one of these events. I am a big fan of organization, so let’s break down the out the outfits in terms of occasion. We have parties, date functions and the inaugural ball. Since parties happen almost every weekend, I’ll make that my next post, because date functions and the inaugural ball seem to be on everyone’s mind right now.
The Date Function. They can be formal or informal, but the formal ones seem to be all the rage right now. I’m always a fan of opting for pretty rather than provocative. There are plenty of girls in the world who abide by the phrase, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it.” However, you will not find any of that on this blog. It’s all about dressing for yourself, not about dressing for other people. If you feel like being incredibly sexy, then by all means, slip on that red bandage dress with sky-high heels and smoky eyes! But, if you’re more into the elegant, “I just want to feel pretty” vibe, then read on.

I think I have a slight problem with little black dresses. I
didn’t want to acknowledge that I had an obsession with them, but when Mummsies
surprised me with this one as a Christmas gift, I knew I had crossed over from “I
just need one or maybe two” to “but this one is so different from my other 2,
3, (fine…) 4 little black dresses”
line. Let me tell you, this dress is different
from any of the other ones I have. It’s got lace shoulders, a beautiful
neckline, an aura of the 1920’s (I’m sure everyone is well aware at my love for
anything flapper related by this point), buttons all the way down the front of
it, pleats and a little ribbon to tie at your waist. I call it my Paris dress
because it feels like it should be strolling around the streets of the City of
Light. If I ever get to go back to Paris one day, you can bet that this is the
first thing I am putting in my suitcase! I put my hair up in a classic French bun
with a black ribbon bow, paired it with a long silver necklace, black heels,
beautiful silver bracelets, and, since it was a bit chilly, a long black
cardigan. In case you can’t tell, I’m basically in love with this dress.
Tomorrow night, I am going to a local inauguration ball to
interview people for my journalism class! If only I was going to the real one… perhaps
one day… Well, until then, I’ll just have to pretend I’m jet setting to
Washington DC in this dress! It’s the perfect dress for the night. It’s mainly
political wife, with a splash of electric blue and black mystique. I’m going to
toss on some black heels, my trusty black cardigan if it’s cold outside, put my
hair up in a bun with black bow (I’m sensing a trend?), pop on a belt and maybe
even add a pearl necklace to really amp up the “political wife” vibe for it. Monday
night is going to be all about being conservative (even if you are a liberal…),
classy and color coordinated. After all, if you can’t play up your inner
Washington Woman on Monday night, when else can you?
That’s all for now dearies, I’ve got to go get ready for
another little get together tonight! XO
