Chambray and Sequins

I wandered into J.Crew this afternoon looking for gifts for a few gift exchange parties happening this week. While browsing among some darling sequined headbands (the person whoever picks the small square box will be quite happy), something else sparkly caught my eye. I glanced up and what did I spy? The most adorable gold sequined mesh bell skirt I have ever seen. You’d be surprised at how many I’ve seen…

Then, I started to think (a dangerous pastime) about what I could wear that sequined skirt with (so I wouldn't feel guilty for buying it). And I came up with these options:

Dressed down: Chambray and Sequins

I really like to pair opposites with each other.  For example, the ruggedness of a chambray work shirt mixed with the flirtatious nature of sequins juxtapose each other perfectly. A open chambray work shirt, like the Selvedge chambray shirt from J.Crew, with a plain white tank (Gap), tucked into the gold sequined mesh bell skirt from J.Crew with a black headband (forever 21), black Reva flats from Tory Burch, and a thin black belt from anywhere. When the weather gets a little chilly, warm up with some black tights and a black cardigan from J.Crew. 

Dressed up: Sequined Sophistication

It's super easy to make this skirt dressed up. Just swap out your chambray shirt for a thick black cowl neck sweater (I would suggest any sweaters from Vince or Theory), flats for heels, add a smoky eye and you're golden.

I've already started planning occasions to wear these little ensembles to. However, I will have to debut these looks after Christmas. Why, might you ask? Let's just say I know what's going to the top of my Christmas list!

"When it Rains, it Pours!"

In lieu of the torrential downpour these last few days, I was inspired to write about rainy day fashions. First off, who doesn't love rain? The freshness, the chilliness, the wetness all make these days a much needed break from the eternal summer sun that shines almost all year round.

Of course, some might think it's a little difficult to dress for inclemate weather, but not this writer! The perfect accessory for the dreary grey skies and showering droplets is rain boots! Now, obviously, my rain boot color of choice is pink, but any bright color like orange, yellow, green, red or any bright color are fabulous. Kate Spade, Henri Bendel and Hunter Boots have some lovely choices. They can really make a rainy day outfit go from dreary to cheery!

Then,we must not forget about the rain coat. It adds so much to uplifting the spirit of anyone on a rainy day. Like a jacket, a rain coat can say many things: you are trying to stay dry, you really want to be a leopard, so you decided to wear a coat to match your dreams, or you are a very classy lady with a well tailored coat. If the sole purpose is just to stay dry, you're a super green environmentalist or just broke, here's a quick, easy way to create a coat: 1. get a massive black garbage bag 2. Take the bag so the opening is on the bottom 3. cut holes big enough for your arms and head to fit through in the corners and middle of the bottom of the bag 4. Voila! There is your black garbage bag poncho.

Leopard coats, on the other hand, can be classy if tailored correctly, and maybe used to spice up an all black outfit (black tights/pants, black sweater, black scarf, black beret, black boots, etc).However, at any sight of pulling buttons, snapping stitches, or making the coat look like a second skin so you happen to look like a leopard, this look has gone from classy to trashy.

A well tailored coat is right up there with a little black dress and stilettos in terms of sophistication. The coat is like a wrapping on a present. It pulls you together, it is what the majority of the world sees on a rainy day. Therefore, it is imperative that you invest in an excellent coat. Kate Spade's yellow Sketchpad Ivy Coat is a lovely option for a bright, tailored look. One of my favorite details on this darling coat: "Every cloud has a silver lining" written under the collar in silver script. Another classic option is always the iconic Burberry tench. However, if you are looking for a raincoat that is a little cheaper, then I would suggest DKNY's Audrey Khaki Trench.

Finally, to top off the perfect rainy day attire, one must not forget the quintessential umbrella. Darling options come from J.Crew, Kate Spade and Lilly Pulitzer. All are pink, happy, and will brighten up any day. Stripes, prints and dots spice up the boring, utilitarian feel of these umbrellas, as well as put a smile on your face, whether you are running across town, or just walking out to get the mail.

"Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket, save it for a rainy day". Well, when that rainy day comes, put on your rainboots, grab your jacket, open your umbrella and off you go!

Ladies Luncheon

You open your mailbox and pull out a stunning envelope. Really, it's beautiful: light champagne color envelope with your name embossed in black on the front in perfect script. Then, you gently pry open the envelope, trying to rip it in as straight a line as possible to minimize damage. You pull out the card (actually, it's an invitation). You read the first line: Ladies Luncheon.

After you get over the initial shock that people in southern California are actually still doing luncheons (aside from the annual NCL-Luncheon) not just picnics on the beach, you mind wanders over to your closet and a whole slew of questions wash over you, including the most important one: what am I going to wear?

Excellent question. What are you going to wear? A formal affair during the day, the time to look polished and pretty, but not stuffy. What to do? Head straight to Kate Spade! (Neimans works too). Kate Spade always has a lovely selection of luncheon dresses and attire. I've been there on many occasions and always end up trying something on and it always looks fabulous! Here's a few of my favorites:

With a lovely luncheon as this, you need a dress to match. If there was ever such an occasion to "dress to impress" this is it! Show them your personality and sophistication in one of these lovely outfits. Ladies, it's time for lunch.

Summer to a T

T-shirts. Not the first thing that comes to mind when someone says, "Preppy!" Let's be honest: there are those days when you reach for your polo and decide, today is a t-shirt day. And then you pop on the tee, walk out the door, and feel oh-so-hipster in your white (or grey, pink, navy, orange, striped, etc.) tee.


This summer, I decided to take a walk on the wild side and purchase, you guessed it, a plain white V-Neck t-shirt (don't worry, I didn't go too wild. It's from J. Crew. I still needed to stay a little preppy). Let me tell you, this shirt has been a staple in my wardrobe! Polo's are great, don't get me wrong, but there's a certain "beachy" feel with a v-neck made of oh-so-soft cotton. I wore my tee for about a week and I realized I needed to buy a few more to keep on constant rotation. I am now the very proud owner of not 1, not 2, but 3, yes, 3 white v-necks.







With those tee's constantly in rotation, I've managed to swap out white tank tops, white polo's, and a few other shirts with a white tee. Now, I'm not saying replace every shirt in your closet with a white tee, but for a casual day or night look, or you plan on beachin it later, this is the shirt to grab. For days, I pair it with shorts (usually a light salmon color or bright pink to get my pink in my outfit), a navy sweater and navy Sperry's. Nights include dark denim, a navy sweater, statement necklace and pink shoes. Beach time is my pink, orange and white Lilly Pulitzer Bikini with matching shorts and pink sandals. You get the idea.


Ever heard the expression, "jeans and a tee-shirt kinda girl" or "I'm having a jeans and tee shirt day"? It doesn't have to mean you look sloppy. On the contrary, as long as you keep the rest of your outfit polished and preppy, the white tee can add a bit of laid-back cool that everyone wishes they could do. Well, now you can, with the help of a fabulous white tee-shirt.

G & T: Summer at the Country Club

The hot topic for any and all country clubs has and will always be "Do you prefer G or T? For all of you non familiar with the country club lingo (it took me about 8 years of living at a country club to know what it meant), G stands for Golf and T stands for Tennis.



On top of the figuring out the confusing country club conversations, which iron to use (golf) or which court top you prefer (tennis), the real dilemma is what to wear. Golf and tennis both have rather strict guidelines on what to wear, especially if your country club strictly enforces the dress code and has their staff ride around on little golf carts inspecting your outfit before they allow you to proceed to the next green (yes, it happens).


Golf is Bermudas, Capri's (rather unflattering) or pants, a polo shirt and golf shoes (preferably pink!) Today I went off to the driving range (yes, summer has begun!) wearing khaki Bermudas and a pink polo shirt with my pink golf shoes. Bermudas are the bottom of choice for the summer, whether you prefer the classic khaki or a fun Lilly Pulitzer print to add a touch of pizazz! Lilly has some wonderful prints this season for the lower half. A polo is always necessary when playing golf. I prefer colorful polo's (bubblegum pink, turquoise blue, orange) especially when I'm just wearing my plain khaki shorts. Now, when it comes to golf shoes, don't settle for just any common brown and cream golf shoes. I'm talking about the pink and green golf shoes that make any pretty preppy pink-loving girl swoon. They stand out and show the world that you take pride in your appearance, are a unique individual, and are more than just a pretty face: you can shoot a birdie and still pose for the paparazzi.

Tennis, on the other hand, has much cuter outfits (don't deny, you know it's true). The tennis skirts, the cute tops, and lets not forget the allure of being able to play it in less than five hours! I like crisp white tennis skirts and bright tops in the summer. However, sometimes a dark tennis skirt is needed, whether you want to camouflage your less-than-toned derriere or just need something dark to wear down there. Navy or black are fail-proof options. Just be sure to pair with a brightly colored top to snazz things up! Pink, white, white with pink stripes, argyle, any pattern is acceptable.


Whether you decide to wear Lilly prints or a black skirt, a popped collar polo or a straight collar, or golf or tennis shoes, just take a break, sit back and discuss the greatest question of all time (at least in the country club world): golf or tennis?

Yacht Jaunt

A few weeks ago, received an invitation. It said that I was invited aboard Sunseeker Superhawk 43 Yacht (more commonly known as the James Bond Quantum of Solace Yacht) this weekend. After I got over the initial giddiness of the situation (I don't know about you, but I am not asked on a frequent basis to go on a yacht jaunt), I thought of something very important: What should I wear? I instantly imagined myself in a darling little yachting outfit, a navy nautical dress with white and gold accents. Then I wandered into my closet and was jolted back to reality. I have nothing that is a navy nautical dress. I have a few things that could give the essence of the idea, but I didn't want to appear too "done". Another aspect to keep in mind is the pesky weather: It's June, which means it's hot at some points during the day, then June Gloom crawls in and casts a misty marine layer over everything, making the temperature drop by about twenty degree's.


My first instinct was to reach for the Lilly Pulitzer catalogue to find the perfect outfit. Wow, was that a good call! Personally, I love to add pizazz to my outfits, and with these Lilly Pulitzer pants, it's just like a never ending party! The patterns and colors are enough to brighten even the gloomiest June days. I love the patterns, however, if you are a little afraid of all that color (i.e you don't like pink and orange flowers all over your bottom half for what ever reason), I would also say stick to the classic white shorts and fun, patterned top (be sure to keep a sweater, scarf and blanket nearby just in case the weather turns). A few wonderful options of these pants and shorts are:

Lilly Pulitzer Pants:

I created a few options that still capture the essence of a carefree jaunt on the yacht yet are still pulled together and look fresh and effortless. However, in regards to the weather, I came up with one key phrase to keep in mind: layering



My go-to items for layering include J. Crew sweaters (typically navy) and scarves. Layering is a key element when it comes to dealing with Southern California weather, especially in June. You might be rocking that fabulous orange skirt and ruffle tank top, but if it's drizzling outside, you'll just look like you're freezing cold. And believe me, looking like an ice cube is never cute, especially in June. So, layers!! Sweaters (sometimes more than 1) are wonderful ways to either dress up or dress down an outfit. One particular sweater I know I will be living in this summer and next year is the "Piped and Twisted Cardigan" from J. Crew's new collection. It's DARLING!






The best part is about all of these outfits is you can take any piece, whether it's the crisp white shorts or the hot pink and orange flower capri's and pair them with a tee, polo, top, or sweater and they'll all work! Take those white shorts and pair them with a patterned top, like this:

A crisp nautical navy and white striped top would look fresh and polished when paired with white shorts and brown Sperry's (see Hello Summer blog for more on Sperry's). Those fabulous pink pants would look smart with a white polo or tee and sweater. The most important bits about this look are:

a) trying to stay warm as soon as the sun goes down

b) everything in moderation. For example, hot pink pants and an aqua chiffon confection? Not so much. But hot pink pants and a white polo? Perfection

c) effortlessness. It should look as if you look this fabulous anytime and are always prepared and up for going on a little yacht jaunt.

Whether it's the cute white shorts and brightly patterned top or the flowered pants and crisp top, you'll look fabulous on any yacht jaunt. Bon Voyage!

Hello Summer!!!

Bonjour Ete! Hola Verano! Ciao l'Estate! However you say it, it all has the same ring: SUMMER IS HERE! And everyone knows along with summer comes a few things: sun, sand and Sperry Topsiders.

As you might have guessed, Sperry Topsiders are one of my favorite summer shoes (actually, I wear them all year round). They are the perfect preppy shoe! When you put these on, you just imagine yourself on the East Coast about to board someone's yahyt and go to a little party. I thrown them on to add a splash of prep to my outfit (as if the popped collar on the polo shirt didn't do it enough). My top pics of Sperry's are the ever-popular navy, the classic brown, and to throw a bit of Cape Cod into your outfit or shoe collection, the light blue and pink seersuckers. Not only are these boat shoes comfortable, they also have a great advantage over flip flops: they don't show off your I-missed-my-pedicure-last-week looking toes. They also give your outfit a unique spin. These shoes provide the perfect juxtaposition of girl meets guy chic. I like to pair them with jeans, a skirt, shirtdress, or shorts. Basically anything goes when it comes to Sperry's!

Another shoe that is a lovely option is the classic ballet flat. I actually have a fetish for Tory Burch flats. I went to the mall last night to buy shoes for my prom dress (which is absolutely FABULOUS! but more on that later...) and I came out with a pair of shoes for my dress and two pairs of Tory's, which bring my grand total to 9 pairs. Yes, it is a touch excessive, but if you see how ofter I wear them (almost everyday), you would see why I need 9 pairs. Why do I love them so much? They are the most confortable flats, the leather is like butter on your feet, the colors and patterns are exquisite, and they are so flattering on the foot! If you are searching for a fabulous pair of flats, run to your nearest Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstroms or Tory Burch store and snap up a few! The ballet flat is called "Reva" and my favorite colors are silver snakeskin (faux of course!), navy and tan crochet, black sequin, and, of course, pink. I like to use shoes to express my personality and style, as well as add some color or texture to an outfit. As you can imagine, I have two pink pairs kept in rotaion because I wear them so often. These elevate any outfit, and can be worn to dress up jeans and sweater, or to dress down a little black dress. Just a look at the patterns and the texture of the shoes show you that these are a work of art. They're beautiful! These are the only flats I wear, they make your feet feel soft and lucious when you put them on, and they give you a little spring in your step!

The search for the perfect sandal is over! The quest for the fabulous flip flop is completed! The journey to find the worlds most amazing summer shoe has been found! What could this magical shoe be? Two words: Rainbow Sandals. Now, if you're not fortunate enough to live in Southern California or you just don't know what they are, they are the "Worlds Most Amazing Sandal" (as if the begining of this paragraph didn't give it away). Flip flops are a part of summer, just like bikinis and the beach. What really makes these sandals the best is not onnly their stunning array of colors and strap widths, but their built in arch support. Arch support? Yes, a foam arch support is built into every Rainbow Sandal, and you can even choose the amount: one layer of foam or two. Did I mention the leather also streaches with your foot to ensure a perfect fit? I have three pairs, and I live in them. They are the best flip flop you will ever encounter. The array of colors, ranging from mint green to espresso, the strap widths (narrow or wide) and the arch support all make this shoe the true summer winner! Once you wear them once, you will never want to take them off! My favorite shoes of the collection include the sandals with swarovski crystals sewn into the strap (I have a pink pair with crystals), and the skinny strap classics (an unspoken but generally known fact: skinny strap is for girls, thick strap is for guys). Any pair you buy, you will love! Buy them initally a little tight at first so the leather can strech, and after a few wears, the shoe will fit your foot perfectly. This is the shoe that EVERYONE (but really, everyone) wears because they are so fabulous! My top pics: the classic mocha skinny strap, the pink skinny strap, and the pink skinny strap with crystals to add some extra snazz.

Prom Proposals (and How to Answer Them)

With Prom Proposals in full force now (or "hunting season" as my guy friends call them) here area few ideas on how to a) accept the proposal b) gently say "no thank you" or c) think about it (not because you don't want to go with them, just because you don't want to put yourself in a bad situation. This is usually reserved for the stalker proposal. See below)A Prom proposal could be the most exciting thing ever, or the moment when you just want to run away from your stalker and hopes he isn't filming this moment to replay it over and over and over again. I'll get to ideas a and b in a second, but for now, let's focus on Mr. Stalker. (Or Miss Stalker, in case any manly men are reading this.)

Here's a scenario that you want to avoid at all costs: the stalker proposal. The stalkers usually mean well and just really really really (REALLY) like you, but, unknown to them, they come off as incredibly creepy. This happens far too often.
Here's the situation: Sally and Bill are friends. They met in math class last year, and chat a little. Bill likes to text Sally at least once a day, usually just "hello". The first few times, it was nice and they had a friendly conversations. Bill decides he loves Sally. So, he keeps texting her. Sally sometimes texts back, but she's starting to feel like, OK Bill, get a life. Finally, Bill is texting her daily, often two to three times a day, then facebook chatting her whenever she goes on, and finally, he gets her video chat name. Keep in mind, you only find out someones video chat when you either a) search their name in a database of roughly ten million people, or b) they give it to you.

So there Sally is, doing her homework one Sunday night, and Bill video chats her. She is just creeped out and ignores it. Then, he texts her with the question," so, what would you think if I decided to become an animal trainer for the circus?" Bill is serious. Sally is just creeped out, not because Bill is a weird, shady kind of guy, but because he is constantly talking to her and trying to get her attention.

The next day, Monday, Sally walks into school, and in the senior courtyard, there is a huge sheet billowing in the wind with the question, "Sally, will you go to Prom with me? - Bill". Then Bill pops out of a hallway and says,"Sally, I know you saw my sign. I've been watching you intensively over the last two months and I've decided that you are the girl for me. I want to take you to Prom. I've known my feeling for you now for a while, and I'm acting on them. This is no impulse action, I have been planning this moment for weeks. Please accept my proposal to this dance that I promise will change your life."

Wow. Talk about a prom proposal!

On one hand, Sally is flattered, and she finds his effort really sweet. But on the other hand, she thinks, That was one of the creepiest things in my entire life. What should Sally do?

Here are our options:

Option A) she can go with him, feel awkward the majority of the time because Bill is trying to make the moves on her, and end the evening with many creepy stories to tell.

Option B) Sally replies, "oh my Penguins! You are such a creeper! Leave me alone! I don't like you, I never will and you are the weirest person on this planet! Can you just go find someone else to creep on, or better yet, just leave?"

Option C) Say, "Wow, that is so kind of you. I'm flattered. That was quite a prom proposal! I don't want to lead you on in saying yes, because I only see us as friends. But, I would love to go with you! You're really nice, and no one has ever made that much effort to ask me to anything. I'm flattered. Thank you so much!"

Now, I personally would choose Option C for obvious reasons. One, because it's getting the point across that she only wants to be friends and she says upfront that she doesn't want to lead him on. Two, because she is flattered, and she tells him that, so he feels accomplished. And three, because she says yes. It's just a nice thing to do. And, honestly, he would be crushed if you turned him down, then Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome asked you the next day with roses and you gleefully throw yourself at him, while screaming, "OMG, I WOULD LOVE TO GO WITH YOU! I HOPED YOU WOULD ASK ME!" Not even a stalker deserves that type of rejection.

Oh, rejection... sometimes it's necessary for whatever reason (there better be a darn good reason too!) Some ok reasons to say, "no, thank you" to a Prom Proposal are the following:

- you will not be able to attend Prom
-you already have a date (although I'm sure the person asking you knows if you do or not)
-you do not want to put yourself in a bad situation (this is usually reserved for the 18 year old senior asking the 14 year old freshman)

Here is the way to break the news to your asker, "I'm so sorry, I_______ (can't go to prom, already have a date, you're a weird 18 year old guy who I've heard does some "bad" things and I don't want to be apart of that). I was so kind of you to ask me though, and I'm flattered!"

Other than that, just go with the first person who asks you! It's the classiest thing to do.

Since we have gotten past the worst of the worst, let's move on to the proposal from the man of your dreams, or just a really good friend. Basically, either way, you'll say yes. (Now, if you really good friend happens to be your stalker, please see the above paragraphs.)

If you go with your really good friend, you're guaranteed a fantastic time! It'll be really fun, there will be no awkward tension, and you'll leave with a smile on your face.

If you go with the man of your dreams, it will either go two ways:
A) it will be the most awkward thing EVER and you'll never want to see him again
B) it will be the most magical evening EVER and you'll float home on a cloud
(I'm a big believer of B.)

In either case, both of the ending start off with one thing: The Proposal. We all know if your friend asks you or if your dream date asks you, there is one thing for sure: you will say yes. But, how will you say yes?
You could....
- jump into their arms as he (or she) twirls you around, while screaming, "YES YES YES!!"
- smile, give them a big hug and say, "Of course I'd love to go with you!"
-pull out the good old, "wow that is so kind of you, I'm flattered, thank you so much for asking me, etc." Then concluding the schpele with, "I would love to go with you!"

Whatever Prom Proposal you receive, just remember, it will be a night you will remember for a very long time. Prom will be lots of fun, you will look stunning, and remember, all the fun starts with the Proposal!

Pretty Pink Prom!

In honor of prom season coming up, I decided a special post on pretty pink prom dresses was in order! And, yes, yours truly just got asked to prom, so I was inspired to do an article about this!

First off, I am a fan of classy, elegant designs. No super short hemlines or revealing cutouts here! Pretty is the way to go. After all, when you're out of college and happen to stumble upon your old prom pictures, wouldn't you want to see yourself in a classy, pink little number with the caption, "Pretty In Pink" at the top, or look at yourself in horror, then shove the picture in the fireplace and burn it so no one will ever realize how skanky you were. Is there even a debate?

These are just a few dresses I came across, courtesy of Bloomingdales. My top places to go when I need a dress for an event are: Neiman Marus (If you go to the one in Newport Beach, CA, ask for Heity, she's wonderful), Bergdorf Goodman or Henri Bendel if I'm in New York, Bloomingdales online, and Nordstroms in the designer departments.

Those are just a few of the top department stores who have large selections, and most of their dresses are exquisite. Some other places to find lovely gowns are vintage stores (I'm especially fond of the vintage stores up in LA), flea markets, or other little shops. If you want a more eclectic dress, Betsey Johnson's designs are full of fun, pizazz, and a whole lot of glitter.

Speaking of fun, have fun with the color you wear! There are so many shades of pink out there! Shell pink, to coral, to fuchsia. The dress doesn't have to be pink, but there should be at least one pink accessory, whether it's your fabulous shoes, perhaps a brooch pinned to the bustline of the dress, or even a glittery hair pin. I usually wear black dresses because they contrast with my hair and skin tone (btw, I'm a light skinned blondie), and then add some snazz by wearing these gorgeous pink kitten heels embellished with pink stones. It also surprises people when I wear those shoes because they're usually expecting something a little more demure from little Miss Classic. Spice things up, and always keep people guessing, that's half the fun of it!

Shoes, shoes, shoes! I've had my fair share of shoes. Do I wear heels everyday of my life? No way! I live in flats. I love heels, but they are way to dressy for anything except special occasions. Putting on flats instead of your rainbow flip flops is considered dressing up and looking spiffy. I'll admit, I do have those days when I just throw on my white V-Neck (J. Crew, of course), jeans (I'm a fan of sevens) ,pink rainbows and sunglasses (Marc Jacobs) and dash out the door.

However, for prom, heels are a worthy investment. Actually, scratch that. Comfortable heels are a worthy investment. We all know the heels are going to come off by the end of the night, but why not be able to stand in them, walk around with them, party and dance with them before your feet are hurting so much, you just have to rip them off. I own a few pairs of heels: brown pumps, black peep-toe pumps, gold heeled sandals (to go with this years winter formal dress), and those fabulous pink ones! Keep in mind, all of these heels are no more than 3 inches tall. I love heels higher than that, but Mummsies is opposed to higher heels. They are all comfortable, and they were all relatively inexpensive and they are very comfortable! I tend to find great shoes at a relatively low price. However, never, ever, EVER buy cheap shoes. Ever. Does that sound a touch hypocritical? Yes, but let me explain: I find the heels usually on sale, so that is why they are not very expensive. I like Nordstroms and Steve Madden for heels.
